جمهورية ميدان التحرير

This was being given out yesterday in Tahrir square. I felt like everyone who couldn't be there should be able to read it too. Will work on a translation soon..the format/spelling below is exactly how it was written and printed...

جمهورية ميدان التحرير

انا واحد من اللي عاشوا في الميدان ده اسبوعين قبل الزحمة، ومش عاجبني الخناقة حوالين شكل الدولة  اللي عايزين مصر تتحول ليها…الميدان ده عشت فيه فعلاً دولة الاحلام اللي عايز مصر كلها تبقى زيه..زي جمهورية ميدان التحرير

في الميدان ده انا شفت واحدة بشعر طويل وبتشرب سيجارة وجنبها واحد ملتحي بيصلي، لا هوه شايفها منحلة ولا هيه شايفاه متشدد متخلف

ماحدش حكم على التاني بشكله وبس

في الميدان ده وفي موقعة الجمل، شوفت منقبة بتربط رجل واحد متعور وهو واقف قدامها مش لابس بنطلون، لا هيه قالت إن دي عورة ولا هوه نظر لها على إنها "انثى" وبس، محدش بص لحكاية راجل وست ولا عمل لها اي إعتبار.

في الميدان ده شفت واحد كان بيتوضأ واللي بتصب له المية كانت مسيحية، لا هية شافت نفسها بتشارك في حاجة غير عقيدتها ولا هوه شافها بتنقض الوضوء.

شفت مسيحيين رغم إن الكنيسة قالت لهم متنزلوش، وشفت سلفيين رغم إن مشايخهم قالوا لهم متنزلوش، الازهر كمان قال متنزلوش، شفت بهائيين رغم إن دينهم بيمنعهم من المشاركة في السياسة خالص، شفت ملحدين مالهمش دين خالص..الكل كان مصري وبس، وأي حاجة غير الإنتماء لمصر كانت بتختفي جوه الميدان..الكل طلع يقول "لأ" لحاجات كتير مقيدانا وبتحكم قرارتنا مش النظام وبس.

الوضع جوه جمهورية ميدان التحرير كان فيه كل حاجة، كان فيه سلم وحرب، كان فيه صلاة وانشاد وكان فيه غناء ورقص وكان  فيه كمان ضحك وتنطيط..كان فيه حياة..

نسبة الجريمة في جمهورية ميدان التحرير كانت صفر ..مفيش حادثة تحرش جنسي واحدة، مفيش حادثة سرقة واحدة..لو حاجة ضاعت منك زعق بس تلاقي الكل بيدور تحته ويجيبهالك

انا راجل بسيط، عمري ما إهتميت بالمسميات ولا الشكليات ومش بيهمني اسم ولا شكل النظام اللي عايزينه..انا بس باقول إني لما باصرخ "مدنية مدنية" كان في دماغي نموذج حقيقي صنعناه وعايز مصر كلها تبقى عليه..

Translation:

Republic of Tahrir Square

I am one of the people who lived in the square for two weeks before this 'crowdedness', and I don't like the fight over shaping the nation that Egypt is seeing. In this square, I really lived in the 'dream' nation that I want Egypt to resemble. To be like the Republic of Tahrir Square.

In the square I saw a long haired girl, smoking a cigarette, sitting next to a bearded man who was praying. He didn't view it as decadence nor did she think he was a backward extremist. No one judged the other on looks alone.

In this square, and in the 'Camel Incident', I saw a veiled woman (in niqab) bandaging a man's wounded leg as he stood in front of her pant-less…she didn't find it to be an offense (Aura) nor did he view her as just some 'woman'..no one gave the idea of man and/or woman any thought.

In this square, I saw a man performing Wudu (Islamic Ablution) as a Christian woman poured him water. She didn't think of it as something that goes against her conviction, nor did he find it to break his wudu. 

I saw Christians despite the fact that the Church asked them not to come, I saw Salafis despite the fact that their Sheikh's and the Sheikh of Azhar asked them not to come, I saw Bahai's even though their religion prohibits them from political participation altogether, and I saw Atheists, who don't even have a religion…we were all just Egyptians, anything other than our affiliation to Egypt disappeared inside the square. Everyone went out to say 'no' to so much that restricted us and controlled our decisions, not just the regime. 

The situation inside the Republic of Tahrir Square included everything, there was peace and war, there were prayers and reciting, and it had singing and dancing, and it even had laughter and jumping around…it had life..

The rate of crime in the Republic of Tahrir was zero. There wasn't a single case of sexual harassment, and no theft. If you lost something, just call out and you'll find everyone looking for it and bringing it back.

I am a simple man, I never cared for labels or formalities and I don't care for the name or kind of regime that we want..All I'm saying is that when I would shout out "Civil, Civil", what I had in mind was a real model we created, and I wanted Egypt to apply it.
